This recognition ceremony was attended by high Okinawan dignitaries and business people. It was a very good day for IR and master Tatsuo Shimabuku, master Uezu and Sensei Uechi. It seems that this may also establish the “official” lineage of Isshinryu. Early in 1. 99. 7, Isshinryu was recognised by the newly formed Okinawa Den- Gokai (All Okinawa Karate Association). The board of directors consisted of many representatives of karate from around Okinawa. Three of the elder masters (late ’8. Shoshin Nagamine of Shorinryu, Yagi Mitouku of Gojuryu and Itokazu Seike of Uechiryu were selected to lead the organisation.
The charter of the association is to recognise legitimate Okinawa karate as taught by the Okinawa masters. The reason this came about was due to the past two World tournaments where the majority of winners of the kata had a definite Japanese influence and did not set too well with the Okinawans. For years the Budokan on the mainland was the authority on Japanese martial arts and dictated what was and wasn’t a traditional form of karate. The Okinawans feel they are the sole authority when it comes to what is and isn’t karate so they decided to form the Okinawa version of the Budokan. They are now researching what is traditional and what isn’t. This is a significant event because this is the first time the Okinawans had met in this capacity since 1.
The reason Isshinryu has been considered, and this was passed on to me (Greg Gudson) by sensei Uechi’s friend Kunio Uehara, was because it had gone three generations of Okinawan sensei and has entered its fourth. Isshinryu has been in consideration for the past ten years and it should eventually gain equal footing with Shorinryu, Gojuryu and Uechiryu in the next ten years.
